Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW X7 doesn’t offer height-adjustable front seat belts.

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Jeep Grand Wagoneer achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The BMW X7 has not been tested.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer’s rear backup camera has a standard washer for maintaining a clear view under various conditions. In contrast, the BMW X7 does not offer a rear camera washer, meaning its effectiveness relies on manual cleaning by the user when necessary.

Both the Grand Wagoneer and the X7 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all-wheel drive and around view monitors.

Warranty

Jeep’s powertrain warranty covers the Grand Wagoneer 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than BMW covers the X7. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the X7 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Grand Wagoneer for 2 years and unlimited miles longer than BMW pays for maintenance for the X7 (5/unlimited vs. 3/36,000).

There are almost 7 times as many Jeep dealers as there are BMW dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Wagoneer’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jeep above average in initial quality. With 10 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is rated below average.

Engine

The Grand Wagoneer’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 45 more horsepower (420 vs. 375) and 70 lbs.-ft. more torque (468 vs. 398) than the X7 xDrive40i’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid. The Grand Wagoneer’s optional 3.6 DOHC V6 hybrid produces 124 more horsepower (647 vs. 523) and 67 lbs.-ft. more torque (620 vs. 553) than the X7 M60i’s standard 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder engine for maximum performance). The X7 requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

The Grand Wagoneer has 4.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the X7 (26.5 vs. 21.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The X7 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Jeep Grand Wagoneer higher (6 out of 10) than the BMW X7 (4 to 6). This means the Grand Wagoneer produces up to 12.1 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the X7 every 15,000 miles.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Grand Wagoneer’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the X7:

Tires and Wheels

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The BMW X7 only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The X7 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Grand Wagoneer has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the X7; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare or run-flat tires, either of which has mileage and speed limitations.

Suspension and Handling

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Grand Wagoneer is 2 inches wider in the front and 1.5 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the X7.

For greater off-road capability the Grand Wagoneer Air Suspension has a 1.4 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the X7 (10.1 vs. 8.7 inches), allowing the Grand Wagoneer to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Grand Wagoneer uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The X7 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Grand Wagoneer offers optional seating for 8 passengers; the X7 can only carry 7.

The Grand Wagoneer has 1.1 inches more front legroom, 2.1 inches more front hip room, 6.1 inches more front shoulder room, .1 inches more rear headroom, 5.1 inches more rear legroom, 2.9 inches more rear hip room, 7.1 inches more rear shoulder room, 2.4 inches more third row headroom, 3.3 inches more third row legroom, 3.6 inches more third row hip room and 16.2 inches more third row shoulder room than the X7.

The Grand Wagoneer’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The X7’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

Payload and Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the BMW X7 is limited to 7507 pounds. The Grand Wagoneer 4x4 offers up to a 10,000 lbs. towing capacity.

The Grand Wagoneer Quadra-Trac II can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Grand Wagoneer can be unhitched and driven around locally. The X7 can’t be towed flat on the ground.

The Grand Wagoneer has a much higher standard payload capacity than the X7 (1580 vs. 1180 lbs.).

The Grand Wagoneer has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the X7 (1590 vs. 1316 lbs.).

Ergonomics

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Grand Wagoneer has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the X7 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

The Grand Wagoneer has standard front air conditioned seats and the Grand Wagoneer Summit offers them optionally in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The X7 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Grand Wagoneer has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The X7 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Model Availability

The Grand Wagoneer is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The X7 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

The Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer outsold the BMW X7 by 77% during 2025.
